Honor 50 | Unboxing & Full Tour

Honor 50 | Unboxing & Full Tour

hello gorgeous peeps this bad boy right here is the honor 50 the first proper premium on a smartphone we've had him in blighty for absolutely younks on it is now completely independent of previous parent company huawei which is really holding it back now it's got full on google services on the go once again and the honor 50 is a pretty exciting uh highly specced device although you couldn't really tell it from the extremely boring packaging i'm going to whip the honor 51 out of this plain bit of cardboard take you on a full on tour of the hardware and the software and for more on the latest and greatest tech please do poke subscribe

so first up a quick peek inside of the box where you will find of course naturally one on a 50 a proper chunky and super hefty 66 watt adapter type c usb cable and scratchy type-c in-ear headphones as well which is a damn shame because that means no proper headphone jack on the honor 50. and last up as with the honor smartphones of yesteryear you do get a condom case bundled in there to help protect your honor 50 from harm that's everything you get inside the box so let's check out the honor 50. and first impressions got to say definitely positive i'm really liking that smooth and sleek but sort of stripped back design very straightforward indeed just a little bit of honor brandon there quite subtle tucked away in a corner then of course the uh very iconic dual ring design only problem is that camera chassis does jut from the arse end of the honor 50 quite a distance that means if it's lying on a desktop table and you're poking and putting that screen it'll be wobbling about all over the place that back end is formed of glass and it's quite a glossy finish but with a kind of an almost frosted uh style appearance  there quite a hazy mirror effect and it certainly does pick up smudges and greasy prints and stuff but not as bad as a lot of glossy smartphones that i've fondled in recent times and this is the green model of the honor 50. you can also pick it up in black frost crystal or the reassuringly bonkers on a cord which is just covered with all kinds of random stuff that smooth glass it gives way to a bit of aluminium edge in which runs the full circumference of the smartphone and then you've got a gorgeous curved display up front and there is actually a pre-installed screen protector on here as well so that's good and used for the durability between that and the rubber condom case should hopefully keep your honor 15 good nick but yes as feared unfortunately absolutely subtle headphone jack action here uh so that is a damn shim that's the actual sim tree as well well it is a reversible dual sim uh effort so you can fit two sim cards in there at the same time but no space for any micro sd memory cards okay so ladies and gentlemen the honor 50 all set up ready for action running a good bit of android 11 but with the magic ui 4.2 launcher slathered on top to change up the general read and feel and as this very busy toggle screen uh kind of hints out as well add a shag ton of bonus modes and toggles and such forth thankfully the general layout uh can be set so it's fairly similar to stock android so you can have an apps drawer chucked in there you've got your google discover feed with all usual headlines and doom scrolling shenanigans and thankfully the magic ui settings menu is a bit more logically laid out than it used to be and you will notice there's lots of extra bonus bits here as well so for instance if you go into home screen and wallpaper you've got fast access to likes of the always on display you've got a nice variety of different styles to choose from most of which are customizable i quite like  artistic ones which debuted on the huawei p40 I believe it was back in the day and I quite like the magazine unlock feature as well which just throws up a different random image on your lock screen every time you wake up the honor 50. Although normally this does give you an option of picking from a variety of different themes including like travel and sport and all that kind of stuff but that doesn't seem to be an option here on the honor 50 anymore you get some of the basic customization options including the ability to choose uh the style of the icons from a very small selection and if you've got a home screen set and you can change up the likes the grid size and you've got a variety of tools to help out with the general usability here on the honor 50 as well including a very helpful one-handed mode considering it is a bit of a beast various gestures all the usual good stuff so overall magic ui is a perfectly fine launcher not quite as clunky and heavy as it used to feel but of course the really good news with the honor 50 is that now the honor has split with huawei it no longer has any restrictions on the google services you got all those lovely google apps pre-installed likes a youtube gmail chrome and full access to that play store and for downloading all of those lovely apps you've got a choice of either 128 or 256 gigs of storage now I do rather like the honor 50s 6.57 inch oled display this is a super curved screen it feels like it almost slopes around the entire edge of the device thankfully despite that i haven't had any issues with uh screen responsiveness when i've been clutching the phone rather tighter my palm flesh has definitely been intrusive on that display you've got a full hd plus 2340 by 1080 pixel resolution quite a cinematic aspect ratio so well suited for kicking back with some netflix or whatever i see that you can't actually get netflix with disney plus on this more for just yet hopefully that support will be coming soon but for right now it's just other services like prime video or youtube etc but visuals are certainly detailed enough when you're just editing some pics or enjoying a bit of movie action uh the contrast is absolutely fine you know not particularly stellar but not bad either could just about make out murky affair like batman when i was watching it in a brightly lit room i can't see it's the poppiest or punchiest of all the panels that i've played with recently even on the default vivid settings uh but you know absolutely fine if you're kicking back with an animation or something still looks quite bright and fun and as usual you've got a bugger lord of different settings to play around with  in the display menu so you can uh tinker with the color temperatures I just accidentally did there just get that back to where it was you got the likes of the eye comfort mode which can filter blue light in the evenings just make things a bit easier on your peepers the e-book mode which basically just turns things monochrome for easy on the eye reason of course the usual dark theme as well which you can schedule and the honor 50s display can scale dynamically between 60 and 120 hertz depending on what content you are consuming otherwise you just bung it on 120 hertz full time if you want to

As for your audio well it is just a mono speaker output sadly  on the honor 50 there's no stereo speakers set up   so I won't exactly burst your eardrums on that top volume that's for sure but it's loud enough to enjoy even with a reasonable bit of background clamor going on at least the clarity stays pretty strong even on that maxed out volume as well it's absolutely fine just for kicking back with a bit of youtube or whatever but of course if you want to enjoy some music you will want to get some headphones on the go absolute bloody shame then there's no headphone jack on the honor 50 which is a massive disappointment uh but at least the bluetooth uh functionality so far seems nice and dependable seems to have a good range on it and no cutouts or anything even when you're out and about

The performance  on the honor 50 comes courtesy of a snapdragon 778 g chipset backed by the six or eight gigs of ram this is the mere six gig model but so far i'm perfectly happy with the performance that i'm seeing on  absolutely up straight away nice and smooth you can uh happily multitask if you want as well and the benchmark scores that i'm seeing uh as you see from geekbench five here around sort of the 800-ish level for the single core and just under 3000 for the multi-core so we're not quite talking you know flagship level snapdragon 888 any of that shenanigans of course but apps that you find for your everyday shenanigans and fight for gaming as well but of course i had to be absolutely sure on that front so i did take the honor 50 for a lengthy test drive with a good bit of gentian impact action uh it was set to lower uh graphic settings by default but i bumped that back up to medium and set it to 60 frames per second which I figured the 778g should handle no worries and sure enough no issues no impact to that frame rate whatsoever nice smooth performance throughout even when things got quite hairy with lots of enemies on screen trying to batter the living crap out of me uh yeah the honor 50 just handled it absolutely fine screen is certainly spacious enough to see what's going on just got that dinky little selfie orifice and that barely intruded on the action at all 300 hertz a touch sampling rate as well so nice and responsive and even after around sort of 40 to 45 minutes of play time I found the back of the under 50 was always starting to get a little bit warm nothing troublesome whatsoever and I certainly noticed no degradation in the performance and actually as this isn't on a smartphone you do of course have those gpu turbo smarts running away in the background gpu turbo x to be precise and this just uh allows supported games to run at a nice steady stable frame rate without putting extra stress on the battery it's actually proven quite tough these days to find a full list of supported games uh but the likes of pubg vainglory all that stuff should still be supported and because you've got that snapdragon 778 g chipset packed in here that means that the honor 50 does of course have full 5g support as well I believe it's just sub 6 here in the uk now it's not the biggest capacity battery in the world here on the honor50  4300 milliamps but the fact you've got that energy efficient snapdragon 770 chipset means that you will be able to get a full day of play out of this no problem as long as you're not leaning too heavy on it an honest dual loop charging tech means that with a compatible adapter you'll get up to 66 watts wide charging on the honor 50 so it'll be filled back up to 100 from completely dead in an absolute jiffy but annoyingly there is no wireless charging support

let's have another squint to the back end of the honor 50 and that very distinctive dual ring design which sports four cameras in total now that primary camera sensor is a 108 megapixel effect but of course you've got the usual pixel binning shenanigans you won't get 108 megapixel images by default just use those extra megapixels to give you bright balanced shots but if you want to you can jump into the more section of the camera ui got a high res and that will give you a full on 108 megapixel snap and as there's no telephoto zoom uh lens here on the honor 50 that will at least give you the option of then cropping in without losing much in the way of detail personally though i just leave the honor 50 on the auto mode where you've got a nice natural looking uh colors uh on the whole as long as the lighting conditions are good just leave the ai mode off otherwise those hues will be boosted on officially the honor 50 also comes back in an 8 megapixel ultra wide angle shooter pretty much obligatory and don't expect the same nice natural looking images with this but uh at least the edge distortion isn't too crazy and you know that's an option if you want it you've also got a 2 megapixel depth sensor which just helps you to produce a nice bokeh effect for your portrait shots and just knock off the old beauty mode though that's set to zero by default thankfully and final lens in the setup is a basic two megapixel macro lens uh so nothing particularly stunning there i still don't really see the point of them but there you go and of course plenty of other bonus modes on here including your obligatory night modes if you jump on into the mall section you've got a full-on pro mode as well so you can piddle about with likes the iso levels the white balance actually see the effects right  on screen and for your home movie effort you can shoot video at 1080p by default otherwise you can also boost it up to 4k resolution there and you could also shoot 1080p at a cinematic 21x9 aspect ratio and again at that 4k resolution perfectly happy with the whole movies i was shooting that gets a little bit grainy and more ambient conditions but audio pickup seems fine and the stabilization is decent too and then last up there is a 32 megapixel selfie shooter here on the honor 50 uh so plenty of detail packed in there make sure you've had you’re your beauty kip as i obviously haven't and yeah of course you've got the obligatory beauty mode shenanigans if you want to boost that all the way up and make yourself look like some kind of freaky mannequin and again seems like a perfectly fine snapper for your everyday shareable shots online if that's your bag not right there in a nutshell is the honor 50 smartphone as it's launching in the uk this week as this Article goes live not sure of the actual uk pricing  unfortunately actually i write this article ahead of that launch uh but hopefully should prove competitive so it seems like a strong all-around device if you're not bothered about having absolute flagship quality specs and features but you know what something that's gonna last you for the foreseeable and you know be fine for good bit of gaming uh movie streaming as long as netflix and disney plus actually come to it so what do you reckon are you tempted by the honor 50 be gritty your thoughts down in the comments below please do put  and have yourselves a bloody wonderful rest of the week cheers

everyone love you
